solitude
a multi media performance by
Robert van Heumen & Arnoud Noordegraaf

performances: see agenda

"All the unhappiness of man stems from one thing only: that he is incapable of staying quietly in his room"

Solitude is an audio visual performance by Arnoud Noordegraaf and Robert van Heumen, in which the audience is led into the mind of the protagonist, a journey which leads one to the outskirts of the mind.

Wearing headphones and separated from the other spectators by semi transparent projection screens,
the audience find themselves in a secluded, audio visual environment. In this estranged  atmosphere, the visitor is made aware of the tiniest details in what might sometimes be common or uncommon sounds and images;  which without physical reference points, can have the effect of swaying  the visitor  between brief moments of ecstasy and a sense of tension.

Solitude is inspired on Paul Auster's novel "The Invention of Solitude" and, similar to Auster's work, it is multi-layered, story is wrapped within story, a Russian doll effect, each tale somehow interlinked with the next, so that the multitude of fictions chime together in an almost choral quality, even if that quality can be cacophonous and disturbing. Voice competes with voice, character with character. Solitude is an audio visual experience, in which every spectator will inevitably create their own story.
